It was first published in 1909 by William Rider & Son, a London-based company that specialized in esoteric books and tarot decks. The deck was created by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, both members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a British occult society that was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
