Frankincense
The physical - Frankincense is packed full of anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties. It is widely known for its benefits in skincare and is great at countering stress-related conditions.
The spiritual - Frankincense is often associated with purification, protection, and spirituality. It is highly valued for its ability to stimulate spiritual awakening and deepen one’s connection to the divine. It is believed to open the crown chakra, the energy center associated with higher consciousness and spiritual enlightenment.
Esoteric history - Many people first encounter frankincense in the story of the birth of Jesus. Gold, frankincense and myrrh were gifted to Joseph and Mary by ‘the three wise men’ following his birth.
The three wise men or kings were also known as Magi. The word magi is the plural of Latin magus, borrowed from Greek μάγος (magos). Greek magos itself is derived from Old Persian maguŝ from the Avestan (a now dead language) magâunô. Through their religious practices and use of astrology, Magi became associated with the occult which led to the English term magic.
Gold, frankincense and myrrh were the traditional substances of these Priest-Kings. These being presented to Jesus by the Magi is hugely symbolic and reveals much about the lineage of the figure at the root of Christianity. It is said that Jesus was a direct descendant of King Solomon and King David. Myrrh is attached to his role as prophet, frankincense as priest and gold to his role as king.
